Traveling with Chronic Pain

Tips for traveling with chronic pain

Tis the season…for traveling! Seeing friends and family should always be a fun experience. Effectively managing your pain can help make the journey easier so you can focus on the moments that matter. Tips for traveling with chronic pain:

  • Practice good posture and sit in an upright position with your knees slightly above your hips
  • Use a lumbar support pillow to maintain your spine’s natural curve
  • Stay hydrated and bring snacks, especially if taking any regular medications
  • Wear comfortable and supportive walking shoes
  • Take plenty of rest breaks to prevent exhaustion which may worsen symptoms
  • Get plenty of sleep to allow your body time to recover
  • Reduce stress and let someone else take the wheel for part of your journey (if driving) or give yourself extra time at the airport (if flying) to limit tension in your muscles and joints
  • Use a rolling suitcase to avoid carrying excess weight (if flying)
  • If you have difficulty walking, ask your airline customer service for gate-to-gate transport (if flying)

Understanding the source of your pain goes a long way in properly treating it. From surgical to nonsurgical procedures, let’s find the right treatment for you.
