You may have heard the phrase “Multilevel Spinal Fusion” for correcting spinal deformities or degenerative discs, but what is this procedure compared to total disc replacement?

A multilevel fusion is typically performed for spinal deformities, such as scoliosis or spondylolisthesis, or severe disc degeneration which is often accompanied by collapsed disc spaces, nerve root compression, or even vertebrae misalignment. Fusion removes motion by bridging two or more vertebrae together to stabilize the spine and alleviate symptoms.

In a total disc replacement, motion is preserved through the use of an artificial disc that assumes the role of the damaged or degenerative disc.

While TDR is the preferred treatment because it allows a return to full mobility post-surgery, not every patient is a candidate for TDR. In some cases, a multilevel fusion will be the best course of treatment.

If you’re suffering from a collapsed disc, spinal misalignment, or a degenerative disc, please schedule a consultation and together we’ll get you back on track.
