What to Expect During the Procedure
Artificial Disc Replacement is performed under general anesthesia.
During surgery:
- The damaged disc is carefully removed

- A precision artificial disc implant is placed
- Alignment and motion are restored
Most patients experience significant pain relief and improved function following recovery.
Are You a Candidate?
During surgery:
- Persistent neck or back pain (6+ months)
- Physical therapy, injections, or medications have failed
- Imaging confirms disc degeneration (1–2 levels)
- No severe spinal instability or advanced arthritis
Real experiences exceptional healthcare delivered
Dr. Montesano, reviewed all my lower back issues and is preparing me for all the future steps for surgery.
Additionally, a very organized office with great staff. I highly recommend Dr. Montasano for anyone with back, neck or any orthopedic needs.
The staff all the way down everyone was helpful, knowledgeable & took care of my husband very well.
Feedback after 6 months of surgery.
Patient: A Vilela
DOB: October 31, 1967.
Age: 57 years old
Height: 5.07
Weight: 158 pounds
Surgery: L5/S1 lumbar disc replacement (Prodisc L), July 25, 2024. Sarasota.
Post-operative evolution
After the surgery carried out on July 25, 2024, recovery took place without major efforts until November 2024.
Feeling good, wanting to run again, I made an action plan to run a 5K at a constant speed. I felt so good that I chose not to seek help from physiotherapists.
To help with strengthening, I started using a weight vest which, together with the CamelBack, totals a load of around 19 pounds.
Evolution
- November 2024: Walk 5K to 6K (3.10 to 3.72 miles). Presenting pain in the T8 thoracic spine region during some training and in day-to-day occasions.
- December 2024: walk and run 6k to 8k (3.72 to 4.97 miles), interleaving 5 minutes of walking with 5 minutes of running, 5 to 6 times a week. Presenting two episodes of mild pain in the L5 region during exercise, having stopped running and keeping walking. Also presenting moderate pain with discomfort in the region of the T8 thoracic spine on the right side for more than 10 times but not only during exercise but also in everyday life after physical exercise. There was no pain in the L5/S1 region.
- January 2025: walk and run 6k to 10k (3.72 to 6.21), interleaving 5 minutes of walking with 10 minutes of running, 5 to 6 times a week. There was no pain in the T8 thoracic spine region during training, but during some daily activities such as getting in and out of a car several times a day, there is a lot of torsion. No physical activity in the last week this month due to a strain on my left calf. There was no pain in the L5/S1 region.
- February 2, 2025: Street race, Publix Run and Arts 5K, held in the city of Fort Myers - FL, still wearing a 19 pounds load. Running performed at constant speed without any pain in the spine region as a whole. The journey took 31 minutes, and I felt a muscle strain in the calf of my left leg, which led me to walk the last 100 meters. There was no pain in the L5/S1 region. Mild discomfort in the right back at T8 at the end of the day.
- March 2, 2025: Streat race, Megalodon Weekend 5k, held in the city of Venice – FL, without a weight vest. Running performed at constant speed without any pain. The jorney took 26:35:55. Without discomfort in the right back at T8. There was no pain in the L5/S1 region.
- March 13, 2025: Keeping my focus on activities, today I ran 10K, 1:09:46 and during this activity I continue to use the 19 pound vest, never running less than 5K at least 3 times a week. Without any pain. It's as if I had never had pain in the lower back.
- The photos are from the race held on February 2, 2025, March 2, 2025 and March 13, 2025.
