Why Choose Specialized Sports Injury Care?
Sports injuries often place repetitive stress on the spine. Without proper treatment, minor issues can become chronic problems that limit activity.
Our sports injury approach offers:
- Targeted pain relief strategies
- Focus on restoring full range of motion
- Strengthening and stabilization programs
- Injury prevention education
- Guidance for safe return to activity
Not every injury requires surgery. A detailed evaluation ensures the right treatment plan.
Types of Sports-Related Spine Injuries
Lower Back Injury:The lower back experiences significant strain in many sports. Activities involving repetitive impact (running), rotational stress (golf, tennis), or heavy loading (weightlifting) can lead to muscle strains, disc injuries, and ligament damage.
Neck Injury:The cervical spine is vulnerable in contact sports such as football and high-impact activities. Sudden force or improper technique may result in sprains, disc injuries, or nerve irritation.
Upper Back Injur:The thoracic spine is more stable but can still be injured during rotational sports or high-intensity training. Conditions may include rib-related pain, intercostal muscle strains, and mid-back stiffness.
Importance of Warm-Up Before Sports
Up to 20% of sports injuries involve the lower back or neck. Proper preparation significantly reduces risk and improves performance.
To reduce injury risk:
Increase circulation gradually with light activity such as walking or cycling Stretch the lower and upper back along with hamstrings and quadriceps Begin sport-specific movements slowly before full intensity
Consistent warm-up routines protect the spine and supporting muscles during activity.

Patient: A Vilela
DOB: October 31, 1967.
Age: 57 years old
Height: 5.07
Weight: 158 pounds
Surgery: L5/S1 lumbar disc replacement (Prodisc L), July 25, 2024. Sarasota.
Post-operative evolution
After the surgery carried out on July 25, 2024, recovery took place without major efforts until November 2024.
Feeling good, wanting to run again, I made an action plan to run a 5K at a constant speed. I felt so good that I chose not to seek help from physiotherapists.
To help with strengthening, I started using a weight vest which, together with the CamelBack, totals a load of around 19 pounds.
Evolution
- November 2024: Walk 5K to 6K (3.10 to 3.72 miles). Presenting pain in the T8 thoracic spine region during some training and in day-to-day occasions.
- December 2024: walk and run 6k to 8k (3.72 to 4.97 miles), interleaving 5 minutes of walking with 5 minutes of running, 5 to 6 times a week. Presenting two episodes of mild pain in the L5 region during exercise, having stopped running and keeping walking. Also presenting moderate pain with discomfort in the region of the T8 thoracic spine on the right side for more than 10 times but not only during exercise but also in everyday life after physical exercise. There was no pain in the L5/S1 region.
- January 2025: walk and run 6k to 10k (3.72 to 6.21), interleaving 5 minutes of walking with 10 minutes of running, 5 to 6 times a week. There was no pain in the T8 thoracic spine region during training, but during some daily activities such as getting in and out of a car several times a day, there is a lot of torsion. No physical activity in the last week this month due to a strain on my left calf. There was no pain in the L5/S1 region.
- February 2, 2025: Street race, Publix Run and Arts 5K, held in the city of Fort Myers - FL, still wearing a 19 pounds load. Running performed at constant speed without any pain in the spine region as a whole. The journey took 31 minutes, and I felt a muscle strain in the calf of my left leg, which led me to walk the last 100 meters. There was no pain in the L5/S1 region. Mild discomfort in the right back at T8 at the end of the day.
- March 2, 2025: Streat race, Megalodon Weekend 5k, held in the city of Venice – FL, without a weight vest. Running performed at constant speed without any pain. The jorney took 26:35:55. Without discomfort in the right back at T8. There was no pain in the L5/S1 region.
- March 13, 2025: Keeping my focus on activities, today I ran 10K, 1:09:46 and during this activity I continue to use the 19 pound vest, never running less than 5K at least 3 times a week. Without any pain. It's as if I had never had pain in the lower back.
- The photos are from the race held on February 2, 2025, March 2, 2025 and March 13, 2025.
