Scoliosis is often discussed in terms of how it affects someone physically through symptoms and treatments. However, the psychological impact of scoliosis has just as much of an effect as the physical impact:

  • Anxiety and Depression: Anxiety and depression are often linked with chronic health conditions. Due to all of the things associated with scoliosis, it can be very stressful to deal with and lead to anxiety.
  • Self-Esteem and Body Image: One of the most psychological challenges of scoliosis is self-esteem and body image. The visible curvature of the spine can lead to feelings of self-consciousness. A study showed that many people reflected on themselves negatively after finding out they had scoliosis.
  • Coping Strategies: One of the best ways to cope with the psychological impact of scoliosis is building a good support system. You could also engage in activities that promote self-esteem and body positivity such as yoga or Pilates.
