Days 1–3 (Hospital Stay)

  • Moderate to severe pain, especially at the incision and deep spinal tissues
  • Movement is limited; walking starts with help

🔹 Week 1–2 (Early Recovery)

  • Pain still present but becoming more manageable
  • Often described as deep ache, stiffness, or soreness

🔹 Weeks 3–6

  • Pain gradually decreases
  • Discomfort may come from:
    • Healing incision
    • Muscles adjusting to new spinal alignment
    • Nerve pain if there was prior compression

🔹 Months 2–6

  • Ongoing improvement
  • Most patients experience mild residual soreness, especially with activity
  • Nerve pain (e.g. leg or arm symptoms) may linger but gradually fade

🔹 After 6 Months

  • Most patients report significant pain reduction compared to before surgery
  • Fusion pain is gone, but some may develop adjacent level stress later on
